BRIEF HISTORY OF S'AGARÓ - LA GAVINA

S'Agaró has been known since the arrival of the Romans, after finding archaelogical remains in some villages.
There were dedicated to cultivation and grazing.
Everything started when the entrepreneur Josep Ensesa Pujades received in 1916, as a payment of a debt, a piece of land on the deserted beach in St Pol. The years passed before his son Josep Ensesa Gubert began to feel a predilection for the place.

The origins date back to 1924, a time when tourism was non-existent, and the sectors success was not expected. In that year the works of Senya Blanca began, where Sr.Josep Ensesa would live.
The Ensesa family along with the architects Rafael Másó, Francesc Folguera and Adolf Florensa were at different stages of the development and artifices of this residential city garden, with a certain aristocratic noucentista styly and was the first reference of the Costa Brava. The idea was to build a catalan town using pieces of folk crafts.
The project was named S'Agaró after a small dry stream "Agaró" that ran through the corner of Sant Pol beach.
Then the emblematic Hostal La Gavina was built, with only 11 rooms, a project which had many transformations in different years until 1953. When it became a grand luxury five star hotel.
